VAVRIL

2026
#vavril

Vavril is a month where we make one short video art piece or clip per day, throughout April, according to a prompt or concept listed on this website. These prompts have been submitted by you, and are wide-ranging and intentionally ambiguous. This is so that we become the prompted subjects, to do something differently, as a creative spark and experiment.

This is not prescriptive, and could be an existing project you are working on, the process documented on each day, or it can be a chance to try out something new. It can use whatever level of technology or analog process you want, and you can do it on hard or easy mode, as a slow or long process, so long as it emerges from your interpretation, inspiration and synthesis.

Scenario1

Of technologies used, we only ask that any use of generative AI is clearly understood, and if used, used in an original way. The goal is to produce and document what is serendipitous and unique to human experience and inspiration, which may be the quote-unquote "content" that AIs cannot and could not ever produce, let alone train themselves to replicate.

Immediacy2

We are living in a world that has begun to break down, due to a pervasive belief that human sense and meaning-making capabilities can simply be outsourced to machines, and it was during the conception of the first LLMs and AI technologies, that individuals and pockets of power quickly learned these would be akin to gullible or "autistic" children to be manipulated.

Remediation3

In the present, our talking encyclopaedias are not novelties to be sneered at, however they should be understood as limited, with reasoning capabilities that are seeded and controlled at source, to produce what are now called kill-chains, and mass social engineering: totalitarian obscenities against life.

While we embrace the use of our machinic partners for research and knowledge work, your inspiration, sense and reason-making must be human. It is because the forces that wish to say the creative soul can be automated, have now wormed their way into all apparatus and affiliations of the artists, driven by hatred of your capacity for deduction, intuition, and inspiration.

FAQ

Is this only for video art?

Yes and no, only videos should be produced, so you could develop an old Super-8 film, just as you could move your smartphone camera through a prism, or collect archival clips online and produce a supercut montage.

Where do I upload my video?

Wherever you want, but we encourage unusual variances if the mood takes you, for example, why not on LinkedIn? For hashtags, please use the hashtag #vavril and the day of the piece (ie. #day1, #day2, #day3, etc).

Post on LinkedIn, are you quite mad?

OK, maybe that was just because Grimes is now doing it — but you could upload them to Archive.org or to CERN ORE instead, since it doesn't matter: we are little souls carrying around corpses, neither insects or specimens.
